JeepcoMJ Posted March 26, 2008 Share Posted March 26, 2008 I'm rebuilding my Ax5 transmission right now from 3 transmissions...I should be able to actually build 4 good 5 speed transmissions once I tear the junk one from my truck. anyways, I'm about to press on the main shaft midplate bearing, and I took it apart. I'm wondering if it's supposed to be packed with grease, or if it's supposed to be oiled. it is sealed on both sides so apparently it won't take in fluid from either side, or let it leak into the rear housing. anyone know this answer? -Pat Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

brigarpeon Posted March 26, 2008 Share Posted March 26, 2008 Even though it looks sealed it actually is not, those are sheilds that prevent metal shavings from entering. It is lubed by internal pressure of the lubricant. Know how the shift light indicator works from internal lubricant pressure? Lubrication of the bearings are about the same process, pressure pushes the lube through the bearing and centrifical force distributes it. Loose grease in the tranny can actually do harm by clogging up oil passages and preventing lubrication. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
JeepcoMJ Posted March 26, 2008 Author Share Posted March 26, 2008 yea I only put minimal grase in one spot...the input shaft needle bearings. that was just so they'd stay while I slid it over. I refilled the bearing with tranny lube (gear oil) and put the covers back on. tranny is almost back together...just have to do reverse idler, and the linkage for that. then just the 5th gear setup and I should be done inside. JeepcoMJ Posted March 27, 2008 Author Share Posted March 27, 2008 riight. here's the finished product. a bit of tweaking for smooth shifting on 5th and reverse, and it will work just fine. and the rest of the pics too works good so far as I can tell. just need to get the reverse lockout (so you can't bump from 5th to reverse) in it, and loosen up the 5th and reverse shift rod.
