a1awind
the jeep is road legal, good.... but now i have a coolant leak it seems to be comming from the hose that goes from the water pump to the heater valve. bought a new one...tried to put it on and it is not comming off so i am looking for ideas here ... i also noticed a leak comming from the lower rad hose... so i guess it is getting replaced too. also.... what will cause the running temp to get hot (not overheat) then cool back down (almost instantly ) to 180 deg the repeat. ...i just replaced the therm and it shouldnt be bad. maddzz1
What do you mean tried to put it on and it is not coming off? The old one won't come off? At the heater valve? Did you buy a 180* thermo?
a1awind
its a 190 thermo yeah sorry, the old one won't come off at the water pump. ...i losened the hose clampadn yanked like hell. it doesnt budge and the end of the hose is very hard to get to....especially with my fat fingers
mvusse
Coolant hoses have a habit of getting "stuck" after a few years. If you have a large enough pair of pliers you can try to twist the hose to break it loose. Or you can stick a screw driver under the end and pry it loose. I'm sure neither technique is safe from damaging parts, so try at your own risk. As for the temperature, that sounds a lot like an air bubble in the system, or being borderline low on coolant. BLHTAZ
If it's the old hose...just cut it up the side with a razor knife ;) . The temp thing could be air in the system. Be sure to bleed it good.
a1awind
how do you bleed it ?
BLHTAZ
how do you bleed it ?Locate the temp sensor on the left rear of the head. It screws in from the top right by the valve cover and just under where the MAP sensor is on the firewall. Park the truck with the front lower than the rear or jack the back up as high as you can...fill the coolant bottle then remove the sensor for a short time to allow the air out. Should only take a few seconds, but you must get the back of the motor up higher than the front for it to force the air to the back of the head & out the sensor hole. maddzz1
how do you bleed it ? If you are talking about the air in the system you should raise up the back of the truck and remove the temp sensor to let the air out. When anti-freeze starts coming out screw the sensor back in. I just replaced my radiator but i didnt have to burp the system. Damn taz your fast
a1awind
well I'm in pittsburgh so finding a hill to do this on isnt hard....now ... does it have to be running or not?
BLHTAZ
No...not running and you will want it to be cooled off when you do this. If it is hot, you will not enjoy it much ;) .

If it is hot, you will not enjoy it much ;) . how's it going to push the air out the top if its not running? it'll just stay where it is right? although i do agree that you should do it cold but seems like it should be running? (idk, i don't have the temp sensor so i've neer been able to do it.)
a1awind
ok, just to reiterate....1.I'm making sure my coolant bottle is full. 2.parking nose down on a hill, 3. with the truck off, I'm opening up the temp sensor to let out the air, 4. tightening it back up when coolant comes out ???????? :dunce:

The air always comes to the top...thus you need to be sure that the rear of the engine is higher. It is just like taking a gallon milk jug, filling it with water then pour out just a little and put the cap on it and whn you move the jug around ht eair pocket will stay on top...same theory in the engine ;) . If you did it running, the water pump is gooing to break up the air pockets and make it take a lot longer to get it out.
a1awind
we bled it. replaced all but one hose (it was in good shape). and the damn thing is still overheating!!!! this time its not cooling back off...and I'm still getting mystery steam that seems to be comming from the junction in front of the therm. but its not leaking...the rad may be bad but would that cause it to overheat or just leak. but its not leaking. at least not enough to cause a puddle. uggggggggghhhhh!!!! help! :wall:
BLHTAZ
The radiator could be clogged and not flowing good enough to cool properly.
maddzz1
Is the water pump shot? Did you replace the water pump recently? I read something about 2 different waterpumps. One that spins in the opposite direction. Look here: http://www.lunghd.com/Tech_Articles/Coo ... gnosis.htm
