89Tonto Posted March 9, 2008 Posted March 9, 2008 I have stumbled across an axle assembly from a '98 Mustang GT, with discs for the MJ. The price is right. ;) I'm trying to find out what is the basic difference between the two axles. Is there any particular difficulty with using a Mustang axle vs. the Explorer axle? 1. Overall width? 2. Axle spline? 3. Misc.? I understand the mustang has 4 control arms which will be cut off for new spring plates. Thanks!
BLHTAZ Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 You will have to buy your gears/parts specifically for a car axle as they are different than the truck versions so it may be a bit harder to find stuff for as the typical truck guys/shops are not going to know how to work on it if needed. It may be a deal, but I personally would stay away from it as it is likely more trouble than it's worth. I had one myself at one time and when I found out what it was going to take to build it...I sold it  .
Pete M Posted March 10, 2008 Posted March 10, 2008 All cars have the 28 spline axle shafts. Not sure about the width. This site has some good 8.8 info: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/Axles.html
