Recommended Posts

soo..i have a opportunity to buy a cherokee pioneer 4x4. it has the 4.0 HO to. the truck looks great an d so does the nterior.

one small problem though...if it is one...it has about 220,000 miles. is that bad? how many miles do there motors usally last? anybody with the motor? i looked at the ground below and couldnt find any fluids leaking..i guess thats good.

i want to use it for a daily driver as i build it up and its only 1295.00. is this a good buy or am i just wasting my money and time?

I have a 90 cherokee sport with 273k on the original engine and trany. And it probably has closer to 300k cause the odometer quit. Its my daily driver and trail rig and has never let me down. My dad had one with 357k on it and it still ran great. As long as it sounds good I wouldn't worry about it.

The 4.0L is the same basic engine regardless of year. My '88 Cherokee just turned over 270,000 miles and still delivers 19 or 20 MPG in local driving and 22 MPG highway. Uses a half quart of oil in a 5000 miles change interval.

I knew guys in NAXJA with over 300,000 on their engines.

Have you heard it run or driven it? That's the key. I bought an 88 MJ w/211k and while it could use a "tune up", it runs strong. Start it, drive it, go with your gut. Offer $900, get it for $1000-1100. If the rest of it is in good shape as you say, a donor motor from a wrecked XJ won't break the bank sometime down the road.
