ohio4x4
I recently found a clean cherokee with low miles .My intentions were a 4.0 donor for my comanche, but the thing is clean and I am a close friend to the seller,so I know its history.Problem is it was put on a computer and #5 cylinder is dead.Bigger problem is that they tried to check it when the hood release broke.I guess it has two latches ,one side poped and the other they have supposably tried everything from pullin out lights, bezels, grill, tried gettin it from underneith,no luck!!!My questions are #1 should I buy it for 500 without really knowing the problem?#2 How do I get the hood open?#3Where do I start with this dead cylinder? Is there a comon problem on these late 90s 4.0s Thanks
beaterjeep
For the hood release, just look at the top few threads on this page. :D
BLHTAZ
$500 might be a good deal...then again...you could be getting a junk motor that you can't fix. Best case would be that it's a simple problem that will only cost you a few hundred or so to fix, but personally...I don't think I would take the risk without connections like I have. When I was thinking about buying my MJ, it had a bad tapping in the motor, but I know a very good engine guy that knows the 4.0L engines and had him check it out. The previous owner said that it needed to be rebuilt and hee didn't want to spend any more money on it. It turned out to be a $5 valve spring broken that cost me a total of $30 to fix after paying my friend for his time fixing it. If you have that type of hook up...MAYBE you should try it ;)
MiNi Beast
If one side pops up then pull up on it and reach under the hood and grab the wire-cross release and pull it towards the driver side and then it should release, mine did the same. Then add some W-D. Engine how good of shape does it look? And if it's your friend maybe be able to work something out like 250 until you get it figured out. If need to rebuild then you don't pay him anything else, if fixable for decent amount then split your cost in half and minus it from the rest of the 250 and give him the remaining amount of the 250 of the whole total of 500. You dig :brows:
DrThunder
if you can get one side open for the hood lift it up as high as you can without ruining it, stick your hand under the hood in the middle and feel for a thin metal rod, pull it and it should release
