Kohmanche Posted June 17 Posted June 17 Been building this 88 Comanche for 3 years now and decided to do a build thread on it as I have a ton of pics to go back on. Was hoping to race last koh but life got in the way. Picked this up from the previous owner who rolled it on its side and roof, crushing the roof in the back and blowing the rear window out. I don’t want the purist hating but it was slightly tweaked when I got it… the plan is tons, 35’s, manual transmission, exo/internal cage, Deaver leafs, and a few cool mods 😎
Kohmanche Posted June 17 Author Posted June 17 Here is the jeep slightly cleaned up and interior out. At this point I was trying to figure out Dana 44’s or tons. What drivetrain and how I wanted it to look.
Kohmanche Posted June 17 Author Posted June 17 Pretty much a rust free interior and ready for some much needed love, this jeep was a factory bucket seat black interior and all that is moving to another Comanche build I’m saving parts for. That one will be a daily driver with stroker 4.5, ax15 on tons and 40’s, with ac…

I forgot there was a Comanche forum and Was googling and said hell, I’ll do two forums. I’m gonna spend a few weeks getting this up to speed as the irate forum. And thanks for following along the journey on this build!!
Kohmanche Posted June 18 Author Posted June 18 Stripping the jeep of all its drivetrain and getting ready for the frame stiffeners and grabbed a set of 99-04 superduty axles
Kohmanche Posted June 18 Author Posted June 18 Axles, 12” radflo shocks, 2” bumps in pinch and pin top for front and back (class rules are 2” travel). At this point I was trying to figure out what leaf spring setup I was gonna do. Either junkyard build, re arched, Deaver, national… ended up going with some custom 61” Deavers built to my spec for some go fast which I’ll share later on

Kohmanche Posted 14 hours ago Author Posted 14 hours ago I decided to do a 2x5 1/4 wall rocker replacement per the class rules. I kept the stock door bottom as it was easier to French in and gave great clearance over stock already. And those are 2x10” 44” tall wood jack stands holding up a bare shell…. Been using those for years for xj builds for the undercoating removal and frame stiffeners. Flame away 😂
Kohmanche Posted 14 hours ago Author Posted 14 hours ago Frame stiffeners welded to unibody and have 3 rear supports 1.5x.250 wall going though both sides of stiffener and welded to chassis. Nothing in front yet as I’m waiting to do the cage tie ins
Kohmanche Posted 14 hours ago Author Posted 14 hours ago Deavers showed up and they were stripped and set at block height and cycled. I didn’t like how tall it was going to be with a compression shackle setup so I drew up a tension shackle setup and decided to go with that. I lost a little clearance in back but I will get way smaller lifter and a lot more compression and droop out of it. On paper it shows 6” up travel and 9” droop with the tension. Pics later on of the new rear setup, these were initial setup pics
Kohmanche Posted 14 hours ago Author Posted 14 hours ago Front axle stripped, artec truss on, inner engine bay frame supports on, PSC one ton xj steering mocked up. Ended up doing 1/8” plate on the entire inner chassis from front bumper almost to rear bumper and the outer chassis got 3/16” bumper to bumper. Ended up not like the artec coil mounts, trackbar, and swaybar mounting points as I realized this needs to be custom. I reused most everything but redid everything on it.
Kohmanche Posted 14 hours ago Author Posted 14 hours ago Picked up a crazy low mile 4.0 and started tearing down for building a stroker 4.5 for it. I built a 4.5 for my other Jeep yj and it party’s pretty good so I changed the recipe up a bit on this one, porting head, bigger valves and bigger cam than before.
Kohmanche Posted 14 hours ago Author Posted 14 hours ago Port matched the heads to intake via gasket transfer, Smoothed the bowl transition. Raised the roof a hair and took it to the flow bench and checked uniformity across all ports. I wasn’t going after a flow monster but I saw good improvement across the board and called it good enough. On paper this motor will be 270/320 but will rev fast and hard. Hypereutectic pistons in the stock bore size, balanced rotating assembly with flywheel.
Kohmanche Posted 14 hours ago Author Posted 14 hours ago And I’m just photo dumping/ tech dumping as I go through my camera roll. The jeep is currently a full roller almost complete and am working on fuel system, and interior currently. I also have an irate4x4 forum that’s farther along but will get this be caught up in a few weeks https://irate4x4.com/threads/jeep-comanche-koh-4600-build.409400/
Smokeyyank Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago Checked out the irate thread, awesome work. Out of curiosity can I get some info on your retainer spring set up? Have a very similar want for my WJ and trying to get some more info. This is what I'm trying to build for my WJ. Company that made them is not longer around.

Have a very similar want for my WJ and trying to get some more info. This is what I'm trying to build for my WJ. Company that made them is not longer around. Thank you for the kind words! I actually have these springs and a Delrin slider I made in the shop as that’s what I first started using and no longer using, I’ll sell em to you if you’re interested, the delrin spacer adapts one side to the tender spring and the other end to fit an oem spring for an xj/tj/jk and I have synergy springs here too. I ordered pin top bump cans but a piece of 2.25” dom will work and weld a rubber bump on. The springs are from eibach 5” long and 25-75lb spring rates. I went with 75lb, they are designed to be fully collapsed with weight on them and add tension when your current spring comes unseated helping push the axle down. I changed mine to mimic a coilover and give a little softer spring rate for the first 1.5” then bottom out and only be on the main spring rate and still push axle down at full droop.
Kohmanche Posted 4 hours ago Author Posted 4 hours ago Here’s the springs and slider setup. That sitting in a drawer. Was going to use these on my other Comanche that I’m building but going coilover and I’m gutting inner fenders still get a proper bump can setup.
Smokeyyank Posted 57 minutes ago Posted 57 minutes ago Sweet, thank you for the info. I already have the trail tamper bump stops and the cans. Running TJ metalcloack coils. So may take you up on those. I'll send you a PM. 3 hours ago, Kohmanche said: Here’s the springs and slider setup. That sitting in a drawer.
