ok got a sweet deal on some 36's.

 

80 bucks for four irok 36x13.5x15

 

just wandering who has 35s and if any pics. I will be going 8.8 in the next few weeks and hopefully 4.88 within a few months to help my 2.5 get some decent nuts back.

 

the 36s won't go on till i get the 8.8 at least.

 

and i do certainly plan on trimming

i honestly like it too. but 4.88s are a must with those 36s

 

prolly go 4.0 when i pop this 2.5. hopefully within a year.

i think my 2.5 manual with 4.10s did almost as well as my xj did with 3.07 auto 4.0 turning 33s

 

so i can't really complain much.

Thats ALOT of tire for a 2.5. Your front will not accept propper gearing for that size. (You NEED to be up in the 5's) 4:88's are not tall enough, and remember, thats the max for the D30. Once you get the 4.0 it will be better for sure.

 

I have seenand worked with, a number of guys in my club with 2.5's in TJ's go to 35/36's with 4:88's thinking they would work fine... NOT. Just not enough snot to run them. Also remember, these are a true dia tire, meaning they run very close, if not exactly 36". Any radial 35 out there is up to a full inch SMALLER than that.

 

My recomandation, as long as you KNOW your going with a 4.0. Go ahead and get them mounted up on ANOTHER set of rims. KEEP the 33's, because your gonna want to go back to them untill that 4.0 is installed.

I disagree with CW to some extent...

 

Let me start off saying that I run 35's on my MJ that is TRAIL ONLY, so it does not see the road. I've driven it on the road a few times to move it from home to storage, and it's done fine.

 

I run 35" Maxxis Bighorns, and they measure out at 34.8", so as close to a 35 as your going to get. I'm running them with 4.10 gears and yes, I do have the 2.5L in her.

 

She does VERY well offroad on the trails (as several can attest to on here who've wheeled with me) and I've never felt like it was under-powered for what I use it for. Thats a bold statement coming from me; the guy who's got almost 400HP in his XJ...

 

Honestly it really depends on what your going to be using your Jeep for. If it will be a daily driver than look into gearing it in the correct power band. If it's not a DD and you'll just be using it for weekend trips around town and the trail than don't worry about it and drive it how it is.

 

I run 35's (Maxxis again) on my XJ and have NOT re-geared and drive it to and fro from whereever I wheel it. Yes I only get 10-12MPG but thats due to the motor, not the 35's. I actually get better milage with the 35's than I did with the 31's. So take that for what it's worth...

 

Anyways, here's a few pics of my MJ with the Motion Offroad 6.5" lift and 35's. First 4 are while I was building it, so ignore the fact that the frame is still red and that the shocks are not connected...

I only drive it 10 miles to work and home a day. after that i drive the car. so yes, primarily i DD it but it is not used for many miles.

 

Trail use is where it will be used mostly and the 4.88 will hopefully recover a lot of the lost power.

 

As is with the 33's and 4.10s it does wel on the freeway. better than many people here give the 2.5 credit for. 5th gear at 75mph 2800 rpm. no balls in fifth but just drop to fourth and i am fine

Hey..I'm running the 2.5 on 3.55 on stock tires, and that thing cruises pretty damn good on the highway. The 2.5 can be a decent motor. I just wouldn't put bigger tires on mine cause...you know... 3.55...

 

I could prolly throw 35s on the blue truck and that motor wouldn't give a $#!&. I got to drive Jeepco's 89 4.0 5 speed with 3.07s on 33s and it didn't complain.

I agree with CW - to give you an example , I too had a 4 cyl jeep turning 33 inch tires and 4.56 gears and it was slugish on the higway - 5th gear was useless - no complains offroad. Our good friend has a 4cyl turnig 35 inch tires but we spapped d44 out of a waggy and went as low as we could - 5.89's and now his jeep can keep higway speeds on 5th gear with no problem and offroad is a crawler because it has a teralow4to1 also.

Please don't get me wrong. There is absolutely NOTHING WRONG with the 2.5 engine!!! I never meant to infer there was. Its a GREAT motor, but like all things, it has its limitations. The larger the engine the more torque it produces, making the "window of operation" larger. Trying to push/roll a large tire without proper gearing in the 2.5 is a known problem area. Large tires have a lot more rolling resistance and weight that many people seem to FORGET about. To coin a phrase, what I am saying there is no replacement for displacement. ANYTIME you push things to the extreme you run into problems. This motor really NEEDS proper gears to stay with in its INTENDED power band. That DOSEN'T mean it won't work. Or you can't live with it. Or you know a buddie who....The single best thing you can do to improve the off-road ability of your rig is to have proper gearing. many people avoid it because its beyond the scope of most wheelers. When they look into it, they find its expensive. SO you hear "I run them with X size and wheel just fine" I use LO Range. Or I run the highway no problem, I just down shift to 4th on hills.

 

What I am trying to tell you is something you will find out for your self once you do this. That's AFTER you dump hard earned coin to find it out. If I can help you save come coin be explaining what I already know to be true, I have succeeded in my attempt. I don't gain or loose a thing. Take or leave what I offer. They are just things I have learned, I offer them freely.

why do you think i don't have RK long arm kit????

 

but I have no problems trying them with 4.88s if they don't work how i want, so be it. off they go. i got them at a good price so making my money back isn't a problem with these. i was just looking for feedback from people that do run this combo.

I based my answers on what I have herd from you in past posts.

 

1) DD

2) W/E wheeling

3) Short ride to work.

4) 4.0 swap likely

 

Taking these into consideration (4.0 strongest deciding factor) the 4"88 swap is a good step.

I once again,! took some advice from you and put them up for trade. I'll try a slighty less aggresive 35 and see how that goes.

Well, I am glad I was a help.. Just sorry it wasn't the answer you wanted.

 

Did ya notice the weight of those IROC's? They are a heavy tire.

I picked up some X TERRAINS last summer for my TJ and MAN there they HEAVY too!!

 

 

I can REALLY feel the difference driving the TJ now!! The dia is nearly identical as the BFG's that I had, I can feel/notice the weight jst driving it.

Nope, the TJ has discs all round. What you see are called, CENTRAMATICS. They are full of a fine silica sand. They balance the tires and rims using centrifugal force.

hmmm sounds hi tech. what ever happened to the little metal things that you hit with a hammer to balance your tires and wheels?

 

They hit the rocks and get pushed round the rim stopping in bad places making long drives home of the freeway "challenging". :roll: :eek: :D
