hvac temp control cable

Recommended Posts

So I have a problem with my temp cable. It came unhooked under the dash at the box. No big deal its happened before. Just put it back on. However this time its like the cable has stretched. Not sure whats going on. Any idea? Would there be a connection on the back of the hvac controls that would of come lose and allowed the cable to move?  Strange part is the plastic tab that anchors the lower part of the sheathing to the heater box is in place to its almost like the "core" wire has stretched somehow.

Ok I just took a look at the parts truck to see what I had wrong. Is the "core" of the cable supposed to be a solid wire or a woven cable?

My truck has a solid core, however the parts truck appears to be a woven cable. I ask because my solid core cable seems to be sliding in the clip on the heater box arm.

So my outer cable sheath came apart and I can’t get the cable to work properly now. My cable is solid core.

I'm trying to find somewhere to purchase a new one.

New will probably not exist at this point. We are most likely stuck with used or possibly an aftermarket replacement. To my knowledge no one is making replacements. You will probably have to source a used one

What you have has the proper factory ends to it? And the retainer clip maybe 2" from one ends attaching point to the HVAC dash controller? I've never seen a solid factory wire on MJ/XJ, mine were always braided both with and without AC. Only reason I'd see the cable coming loose -- assuming it's factory -- is that retaining clip I'm talking about is broken or gone. In the early years, the retaining clip into the controller was black plastic but in 95/96 it was red. These pics are from a 95 XJ I was disassembling. That retaining clip on the cable is critical to keep the cable from falling off. There is also a retaining clip on the other end of the cable as well. These HVAC cables look to be available on eBay for $50.
