Rear parking brake cable routing

I've been doing maintenance on my rear drum brakes.  Because I was there I decided to get new rear parking brake cables.  How is one supposed to prevent the cables from running on the rear leaf springs?

 

The truck has a Dana 44 if that matters.

They are supposed to come down over the exhaust.

Oh boy, that's kinda disappointing, it was challenging to get that cable attached at both ends.  I might just drop the exhaust and loop it back on the correct side.

I had one cable melt because it fell on to the exhaust. I would just use a hose clamp and secure it to the axle tube. If you want a hidden hose clamp use some black electrical heat shrink to cover the band of the hose clamp and put the screw of the hose clamp on the front of the axle.

Interesting thought, I might use the loose steel sleeve that comes on the cables to attach it with a hose clamp.

I don’t know about aftermarket lines but the OEM ones are stiff enough that they cannot fall onto the exhaust if they are routed and secured properly.
