new fuel pump makes a whistling noise?

Recommended Posts

on day 2 of driving the truck around the block she's developed a fairly loud whistling-esque noise coming from under the back of the truck that's consistent no matter the rpms.

2 steps forward, one step back...

more info.  it's not the pump, it's the seal of the assembly to the tank.  I can wiggle it with my hand and change the pitch of the noise.  guess I gotta pull it out and swap out the seal.

why can't fixed things stay fixed?  :furious2:

the plot thickens.  if I pull the return hose off the pump assembly and dump it straight into a gas can, there's no squealing. put it back on and the squealing comes back.  I'm very confused.

it was indeed sitting on the bottom of the tank and causing the squeal. :L:

but the reason it was sitting at the bottom of the tank is that the product I bought has no method of firmly securing the pump.  literally the sock at the bottom was what held it in place.

and I didn't notice this now blatantly obvious issue.  :furious2:  thankfully I'm still in my window for returns.

I have great admiration for anyone that swaps a pump with the tank still in the truck.  it is challenging enough with the tank sitting on the pavement.  I think I'll do a writeup on this whole stupid experience.
