4wd conversion questions

Recommended Posts

so w/o would probably be better then?

well i just checked it again under 4wd w/ housing, is that correct? well i checked that earlier and those options above have changed. theres only a w/vacuum disconnect, 3.07 ratio up. they had all three of those listed before.

Personally I hate the 3.07 ratio. Hate it with a passion. If I were in your shoes, I'd leave the truck 2wd for now and start saving for a gear change in the Dana 44 and find a Dana 30 front axle to match the new ratio rather than spending money on a Dana 30 with the sucky ratio. Even 3.55s would be much better, but it all depends on the tire size you want in the end.

Also try your hardest to avoid the disconnect (called the Central Axle Disconnect or CAD). It's just a pain in the butt.

well like i said i am just gathering information right now. so all and any info is welcome. and advice. which would be the most preferred ratio? what all do you have to do if you change the ratio of the d44?

eventually i plan on getting at least 33's. i don't need anything bigger really.

carrier break for D44's is 3.73. If you regear a 3.07 to 3.73 or up, you need a different carrier, or what's called a "thick" gearset.

Might want to consider adding a locker at the same time, since you have to reset the gears anyway.

just a different carrier. They can be had new for <$100, or even less used. I got kinda lucky and found one from an old friend on NAXJA that already had a powertrax installed for cheap $$$. I just added the 4.56 gearset and had it all set up once.

Regearing is one of the few things I would gladly let the experts do for me. It's part art and part science and since I'll never be doing it all that often, I care more about it being done right the first time than trying to save a few bucks. Other guys have other opinions. :D

Shop around for labor prices and warranties. You want it done right, but there are some shops that charge an arm and a leg for it. Make sure the warranty is just as good as the cost.

alright. i will do that then.

it's pretty hard to find a 5speed cherokee with 4wd around here for a cheap enough price. though i don't really think i will have the time or money to do this conversion right away. i will just fix 'er up and paint 'er and stuff until then.
