tkgibbs27
what is needed exactly to do this? and how much do you guys think it would cost?
Pete M
- 4wd transmission that matches your engine's bolt pattern - t-case that matches your transmission's spline count - Dana 30 front axle that matches the rear axle's gear ratio (not necessarily what you have now, but they have to match) - front driveshaft of the correct length - rear driveshaft of the correct length - all the t-case shifter assembly stuff (don't forget the little linkage pivoting bracket that attaches to the underside of the body) Cost is entirely dependent on you. Some guys have purchased whole vehicles for $200, other's can spend thousands building up the individual parts.
tkgibbs27
well finding a 4.0L with 4wd over here is almost like finding a needle in a hay stack. it's possible, though there aren't that many listings, especially within a reasonable price range and stock without any lifts or other mods that would bring someone to increasing the price. but anways, i found an '89 mj over in portland, oregon for 950$ but it doesn't have 4wd. Pete M
Myself, I prefer to pick and choose the parts. That way I get the best of the best, rather than simply what Jeep used back in the day. This is what I have in my 90 (which technically was 4wd to begin with, but I've replaced everything but the engine and trans): --97+ Cherokee Dana30 (because it has the bigger 297 joints on no CAD and is new enough that a complete overhaul wasn't necessary) --MJ/XJ Dana 44 --95+ bellhousing for the AX-15 (external slave) --NP-242 t-case (for fulltime capability)
tkgibbs27
i am looking at these two mj's right now. http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/car/525366864.html http://boise.craigslist.org/car/529915824.html i am waiting to see what the one in boise looks like before i make a decision on that one. first of all i have to sell my truck first, hopefully i can do it before either of these guys sell these mjs. i would like to get the one in boise so i don't have to deal with converting. and i would have some money to fix anything up that needs to be. plus it's a long bed and that's a must for me for my future plans. the difficult thing is trying to find a canopy that fits the damn thing. CWLONGSHOT
BTW.. you do NOT NEED a Mj to do this!!! Look for XJ's!!! Cheaper and WAY WAY more plentiful!!! CW
JeepcoMJ
BTW.. you do NOT NEED a Mj to do this!!! Look for XJ's!!! Cheaper and WAY WAY more plentiful!!! CW exactly all parts would be $500 MAX if you buy a similar year and transmission-equipped cherokee. the ONLY thing that would be different then, would be the rear driveshaft. and that will cost $90 or so to get shortened. CWLONGSHOT
GOOD CATCH PAT!!! Yea the XJ drive shaft for the rear is different legnth. But as Pat said, you could get yours shortened (Likely locally) pretty cheaply. :D CW

tkgibbs27
just looking into it. i am working out a decision between two different mj's right now. one of them doesn't have 4wd. better shape than the one with 4wd but more money is wanted. think i will get the one with 4wd already and fixer up. comancheon33
Costs me 100 bucks to have an XJ driveshaft retubed to fitan MJ everytime. I have done this twice now. Both time the factory shaft was the rubber filled POS.
tkgibbs27
does the year of the xj matter for using the parts?
Geonovast
Not really. My red 91 has a transmission from an 86 XJ and the front axle is from a 94.
tkgibbs27
ok. so you can use all the parts from the donor to convert it to a 4wd? is there anyone around close to me that has done this conversion before?
Geonovast
Yes, the only thing you cannot use from the donor is the rear driveshaft. XJ shafts are way too short.
tkgibbs27
alright. how do you come across getting one the right size? do you gotta have it lengthened?
Geonovast
You'll have to do measurements, and I would recommend getting your current rear one shortened.
tkgibbs27
what's the gear ratio for the dana 44s they put in the 89 mj's?
Geonovast
Depends on the motor, tranny, and packages. Generally speaking, Jeeps did this. 4.0 + 5 speed = 3.07 4.0 + Auto = 3.55 2.5 + 5 speed = 4.10 2.5 + 4 speed = 3.55 2.5 + auto = 4.10 Not sure what they did with the 2.8, but I know 3.73 was also an option. Just look at the tag on the diff. If all it gives you is gear tooth numbers, take the ring number divided by the pinion number.
tkgibbs27
well the one i am working on getting is a 4.0 5speed. only 2wd so i need to get all this info gathered up on converting. so i know what to get. haven't seen to many cherokee's close by that are 4wd for a low enough price. tkgibbs27
it's not in my hands yet. but the guy is keeping it for me until i can pay it off. so it will be mine here soon. a friend of mine is getting me a job working for the carpenters union and i believe the wages are around 20+ dollars an hour. he said i will be worth up to 10 hours, but only four days a week. which is fine with me. like i said. i am trying to get all this info gathered up now. Geonovast
Gotcha. I'd get the non-disco without ABS. But that's me.
