INSANE OIL PRESSURE GUAGE?

The oil pressure gauge  on my 86 is erratic, to say the least.  It will record a normal temperature for a while, then it goes wild, like a magnetic compass would if you surrounded it with magnets.  Then it settles down.  Then goes wild again.

Any suggestions as to what is going on?

I'd be concerned if my oil pressure gauge was reading temperatures.......

 

Unplug the sender and see what happens.

I would suspect the sending unit is on the way out. Take a look to see if it’s dribbling oil.

But also take a look at the wire for it. If it rubbed and shorted to ground somewhere it’ll max out the gauge every time it makes contact.
