Seth
Hey, I am swapping the transmission in my Comanche from the Peugeot the the Aisin. I purchased a transmission from a salvage dealer thinking that it was an ax-15, but it looks like it may be an ax-5. As I understand it, the ax-5 has 14/21 splines and the ax-15 has 10/23, and that the ax-5 was for 4 cylinders and the ax-15 was for 6 cylinders. Is this correct? I've been using car-part.com to find parts, and these are the listing choices for transfer cases: If this is right, does that mean that there were two Aisin transmissions for the 6.0 4x4 that had different numbers of splines? Pete M
that might be a hiccup in their system. my 87-90 factory parts manual doesn't list anything like that that I can see.
Eagle
I thought the manuals were 21-spline and the automatics were 23-spline. But I don't have an '89 so I've never paid much attention.
Pete M
4bangers were always 21 spline. the peugeot was always 21 spline. the AX-15 was always 23 spline. the AW4 was 21 spline 87-90 and then 23 spline after that. if the AX-15 started out as 21 spline output, I'm going to need some hard evidence to believe it. Seth
Ok, new info.... I counted the splines on my transmission, and it has 10 and 21. I also looked up the serial number, and it looks like I was sold a Peugeot and not an Aisin (53005252). This being the case, should I just swap in the Peugeot? I was going to swap everything (bellhousing, mounts, transfer case, etc), but if I already have the transmission it would save me money and time to just throw it in... on the other hand, I know the Peugeots weren't the best transmissions. Will I regret not going with the ax-15?
Pete M
if they sold that as an AX-15, I'd go get my money back. but yes, you can swap it in too. fingers crossed that it's not bad. just don't waste any money rebuilding a peugeot.
87MJTIM
Does the case split in half - left and right? If so, it’s a BA10. If it splits front and back sections, then it’s an AX series
