Stereo system

Recommended Posts

I know this has been talked about a few times but wanted to get some more thoughts and opinions. Right now considering basic deck, upgrading the speakers and getting a sub with an amp. My question is for those that have done it you feel an amp as needed for the speakers or is the deck enough? Since the Cab is tiny I don't think an amp would be needed but wanted to see. Since I plan to get a sub with a amp don't just want to hear bass either. In my WJ I have a decent system but it's not that loud. I can crank it all the way and it's ok but I wouldn't mind more. For the sub I'm thinking a 10" with a mono amp. I don't need a rattle any feelings loose but I want to feel some bump in my trunk. In regards to amp and sub placement what has worked?

It makes sense to get an amp if you're adding a sub. But amps don't have to be only for a sub. I would get a power amp and add an audio crossover circuit, which separates the bass from the higher frequency tones. You can look them up online. This allows most of the bass to go to the sub, and your typical audio to go to the speakers. I would think that if your upgrading your speakers as well this would be the most ideal and balanced approach.

I like having the sub - it has a separate volume control so if want to dial back the thumping easy to do.

Whole stereo system ran around $200-$300 for all 4 kicker speakers, a head unit and a sub with built in amp.

Went with a marine head unit - think it is a Sony - really like those have one in the boat as well - bluetooth/USB is the way to go - without the CD player there are no moving parts (mech-less) and they are about 1/2 the depth of a standard unit so super easy to tuck all the wires back up in the dash for clean install.

Not sure if this link will work - but here's what I put in mine:

I have a kenwood ksc-sw11 in my WJ and really don't want to go with a built in amp. It's ok in the WJ and fine because of space constraints but I want an actual sub. I've had plenty of systems in different vehicles in the past. Space wise I'm not worried about it because the MJ is simply a pleasant driver and occasional hauler. So behind seat space isn't used for anything other than jumper cables and tie downs.

I'll chime in. I have a Pioneer head unit, 22wx4 OR 22x2 and 70wx1 @2ohms for a sub. I've got a good pair of JBL 5.25" speakers in the door and a 6.5" dual voice coil Bazooka tube in the back. That's it. The DVC tube runs at 2ohms which makes the most out of the 70w being fed to it. No external amp. You can get a mid-level Pioneer or similar head unit for <$150, good speakers for <$100 and, IMO, you can probably find a used Bazooka for $100 or less. An 8" dual voice coil tube will give you some more bump if you want, but the 6.5" will really surprise you with how hard you can drive it and it snugs right in behind either seat and does not limit the seat from going all the way back. There's my nickels worth of opinion.
