1989 short bed project

Recommended Posts

This begins my second comanche project. Right now the plan is to do all the body work this winter and stockpile parts. As of now i have a JK rubicon axle to go into the back and I'm on the fence about swapping everything from my 97 XJ into it. more pics will follow as i make progress

Little more progress. got all the interior pulled and more cutting of the old floor pans. then continued stripping the engine bay. Next is getting the new floor pans in and the rest of the drive train out. Since my XJ is my only 4x4 and its still snowing I'm not going to get into swapping the engine and everything until it warm out. Leaves plenty of time for body work and paint

alot of progress made. Truck ended up on 37s. 488 gears with oem rubicon locker. front is still the dana 30 but i have a jk dana 30 stripped waiting to get built and put in. ended up doing a RCI fuel cell. Rubicon express long arm kit. Truck ended up at around 7.5 in of lift with the rear axle and perch combo. did the WJ knuckle swap for the bigger brakes until the JK axle is ready.

I'll get some pics of that today. Did a quick upgrade. I came across a mean green alternator but it was for a 2001 and I'm all 97. All I had to do was pop off the back covers of both alternators and switch over the parts I need. Did a little grinding on the bracket and it bolted up and worked perfectly fine

Alot more has been completed. Finally got around to swapping in the JK axle. Trussed, sleeved and gussets. Having the extra width of the JK axles definitely helped with the 37s. Fenders and bed sides trimmed about as far as i want to go so I went ahead, and limit strapped it. also started running into an issue with the front shock binding against the unibody at full flex. Added Barnes front stiffeners and steering box brace. just completed welding the dirtbound rear bumper but i am modifying it to hold a rear mounted winch.

Engine and drivetrain:

97 xj swap

Axles:

Rubicon Dana 44 rear trussed with factory locker and 488 gears

Dans 30 with artec swap truss and barnes 4wd sleeves open carrier and 488 gears

Steering:

Teraflex JK tie rod

Barnes 1 ton drag link

Custom Track bar

Suspension:

Rubicon express long arm kit

7.5 in front coils

Stock rear Leafs (Dana 44 gave me about 8 in of lift)

Rubicon express shocks

Bracing:

Rubicon express track bar brace

Barnes steering box brace

Barnes front stiffeners

Bumpers/Armor:

Affordable offroad front fended plates

smittybilt front bumper with warn m8000, KC cyclones, and morimoto 4 bangers.

Dirt bound rear bumper with lower armor and smittybilt 12k winch.

Wheels and tires:

37 12.5 17 Baja Legend MTZ

Procomp 5x5 -12 steel rims
