You haven't experienced a rust belt Jeep have you?  When there is no metal left the carpet decides to start rusting away as well.

Nope, part of the reason I have chosen to live where I do.

Actually, road departments here started chemical treatments about 20 years ago. It became necessary to do more with fewer people, so they started experimenting. Most do ice pretreatment with liquids, and in my area, they are adding salt to the sand. Part of that is also that they had to limit the use of sand, because of salmon species being placed on the ESA.
