Twisty Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 Mitch wants to buy the gas tank from my 1986 2.8L MJ. I believe that the fuel pumps are different between carb'd and EFI motors...no? If this is the case, can he take his working pump out of his leaky tank, and stick it in the tank that I'm giving him? Thanks. :chillin:
Pete M Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 I think the 2.8L has a mechanical pump located on the block.
Mitch Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 I have a 1989 4.0L shortbed and I don't want a lot of fabrication on this project.
pingpong Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 I think the 2.8L has a mechanical pump located on the block. I believe Pete is 100% correct on this.
Twisty Posted October 26, 2007 Author Posted October 26, 2007 I looked up the tank online, and it appears that the same ones were used for 1986-1992. I think it will work...if you are able to switch the pumps around.
Pete M Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 If your 86 has the larger gas tank, then it won't fit in a shortbed. If your 86 has the smaller tank, then there will likely be some mods needed to hang it as I doubt the straps are in the same spot.
Twisty Posted October 27, 2007 Author Posted October 27, 2007 Mitch is just going to throw it in the bed, so size doesnt matter. I'm just worried about the fuel pump fitting into the new tank. I think it will. Thanks guys.
JOMJ87 Posted October 27, 2007 Posted October 27, 2007 OK i just done all this research.. Bare with me here. ALL tanks are the same if the size is equal. The pumps are different BUT the will interchange. the sender or all the hardlines stuff is differnt on some tanks but the pump itself will swap between all of them (YJ XJ MJ and maybe even ZJ) I am running a YJ pump from a 91 on my MJ with my STcok pump and sender. Just use the part to bolt the pump on the sender off of the pump thats going in and that wil relocate the bolt hole to line up. Good luck and sorry i didnt see this post sooner. Cole
Twisty Posted October 27, 2007 Author Posted October 27, 2007 Thats great to hear! Thanks for that Cole.
JOMJ87 Posted October 27, 2007 Posted October 27, 2007 No prob, i just wish i could have helped sooner. Cole
Mitch Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 Cole are you saying that the tank (so long as the gallons are the same as my current one) should bolt right up? I understand that I will have to swap the internals. I am just wondering if I can put the tank twisty has in the stock location on my truck without extra fabrication. Sorry to ask the same questions over....
Oizarod115 Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 Cole are you saying that the tank (so long as the gallons are the same as my current one) should bolt right up? I understand that I will have to swap the internals. I am just wondering if I can put the tank twisty has in the stock location on my truck without extra fabrication. Sorry to ask the same questions over.... problem is you're getting a longbed tank, as its an 86, and if you have a longbed thats just peachy... but if you have a shortbed it might not clear the axle and other stuff like that. so they were sayin if you have a small tank from a longbed it MIGHt fit there.
JOMJ87 Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 The tanks are identical if the size is the same. theres only a couple tanks choices. And like i said above the internals and pumps will interchange between senders. Cole
Pete M Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 There are 3 different tank size choices. Two for the longbed; 23.5gal and 16 gal, and one for the shortbed; 18 gal. I believe the 16 was eventually phased out.
Twisty Posted November 1, 2007 Author Posted November 1, 2007 If you're just going to throw it in the bed (like I assumed) then this tank will work. BUT if you want to bolt it up...then you will need a short bed tank. ;)
JOMJ87 Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 Now if you take some messurements there might be someway to fit it but thats a pretty big maybe. Good luck with it Cole
Mitch Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 I did plan on putting it into the bed origionally, but I am now realizing that I use the bed entirely too much to do that.... so unfortunately I have to put it back in the stock location, which means I will have to buy some skid plates for it now.... Thanks Tim, I will pm you on our club forum. :)
