1988 MJ originally had an automatic with the shifter on the steering column. Has been converted to a manual transmission by the PO. You can’t turn the key off all the way to pull it out. If the automatic shifter is placed into park the truck won’t start at times. Help

Depending on your engine (2.5/4.0) both have a Starter Relay, both are similar, yet different. Regardless of which engine you have take the Starter Relay Ground Terminal and run that straight to engine or body ground. This will bypass the Neutral Safety Switch (NSS), allowing ENGINE to START at all times. BEWARE: engine will start in gear as with any manual transmission. This will not help in getting the KEY out of the IGN SW in the column, but should take care of your starting problems.

I’ve a spare steering column out if another MJ I own. I’m going to break it down this week and modify it if I can. I will post pics on what I find and what mods I did.
