drcomanche Posted June 4, 2020 Share Posted June 4, 2020 I'm replacing the clutch and all that in my truck and I see that there is no pilot bearing in the crank. It's just a large brass washer(?). Was scrolling through pages trying to find out what I've got here and couldn't find anything on it. The pilot bushing that came with the kit is much larger than the end of the trans shaft. Eagle Posted June 4, 2020 Share Posted June 4, 2020 Google "pilot bushing" You have a mongrel. The truck is an '88, the engine is a '94. What year is the transmission? What year did you ask for when you bought the clutch kit? The input shaft and pilot bearing/bushing specs changed over the years. JustEmptyEveryPocket Posted June 4, 2020 Share Posted June 4, 2020 I'm just guessing here, but when I changed engines in my truck (factory stick shift) I used an engine from an automatic donor. After pulling both engines I noticed the auto's crank had a huge diameter opening. Went back and checked the og engine and there was a second ... bushing? ... besides the pilot bearing in the crank. I had to pull out both pieces and change them over to the new engine. So I bet whoever swapped stuff last time didn't grab the right bushings from the original items and decided to use a lathe to turn down a hunk of brass that would work. When I purchased the truck, I was told the engine, trans, and t case came from the same cherokee, so i would assume they are all 94. Again, just guessing, but thats what it looks like to me. Maybe that is it. It looks well machined, so i figured it was some kind of part that belonged. Limeyjeeper Posted June 5, 2020 Share Posted June 5, 2020 1994 engine = 1" crank bore 1994 AX15 = 3/4" diameter input shaft If yours match these measurements you will need Novak Part No PB2001295. The year of the truck is irrelevant if the complete drivetrain is a 94 it is easy. If your crank bore is 1 1/16" then you have a pre 92 engine or crankshaft. If your AX15 input shaft is 19/32 then it is a pre 1992. Novak has a pilot bearing for any combination of sizes. When I did my AX15 conversion on my stroker they came to the rescue as my crank was early and the AX15 was a 1998. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
drcomanche Posted June 5, 2020 Author Share Posted June 5, 2020 I found what looks to be the correct part, but it says its for mating an amc engine to a Ford transmission. I'm not sure how this correlates to my AX15, though. Is my input shaft different? Custom? It's never easy with this thing. I'll measure the input and the bushing when I get home today to see how they match up. I sent an email to Novak themselves to see if I could get more info. BeatCJ Posted June 5, 2020 Share Posted June 5, 2020 Measure the diameter of the end of the input shaft on your transmission. I would bet it's about 0.590 inches. If so, you have an earlier transmission, 1992 and later are SUPPOSED to be 3/4". I would bet the PO had the year of your drive train wrong is all. I havent removed the bushing to measure bore, but the casting number tells me the engine is 94.
