Tail Light Install

Recommended Posts

I just installed some tail lights that I got from @Gjeep. After I removed my old tail lights and was installing the new set, I noticed that the screws that go into the tabs were binding after a couple turns. Not wanting to crack the tabs by putting too much torque on them I compared the new lights to the ones I just removed. It appears that different size holes were used for them or mine were just worn in. I went to Home Depot and picked up some stainless screws that were smaller and they threaded in without any binding. Not sure if this contributes to a lot of broken tabs, but thought it would be worth sharing.

Nice work and great looking jeep. I also worked on my taillights yesterday and picked up some of those snap nuts or u nuts from auto zone because I had to use an angle grinder to get the rusted screws out.

Cool bumper BTW. I noticed you have pods in there, I'm in the middle of wiring some up myself. How did you wire them? I first connected mine to the reverse wire but then realized that wasn't going to be enough power or something because they did not want to work. Thinking I might run a lead directly from the battery but try to get the connection to the reverse light connected to it in the back.

Thanks! Any chance you have the part number for those snap nuts? I wired them straight to the battery and have an aux switch in the dash to turn them on/off.

I can tell you between my 2 trucks — the 89 had Phillips screws and my 92 torx.

Sometimes you're better off to just replace all those taillight screws and nuts at the same time.  Personally, I'm happy with the ones I picked up from Fastenal.
