Mr.H_H
The timing cover ended up being cracked. I swapped that out, loosing a bolt in the process. Got the water pump back on and noticed this. The crude must have been holding it together because it has risen from the grime mark. Any thoughts.

eaglescout526
2.5L. Only the 2.5’a have that shock.
Mr.H_H
89' 2.5L with a 5-speed. I bought this to get me to the river and hardware store for projects. This is quickly becoming the project. Had it for two months during the shelter in place and have been doing little things to make it road safe.
eaglescout526
That shock is hard to find/irreplaceable. Just keep it and clean all the gunk off of it and it is good to go. Looks like it could use a degrease bath.
Mr.H_H
Did the rubber giving out cause it to raise up?
eaglescout526
That is entirely possible, but I wouldn't worry about it too much like I said. Its just a shock absorber that AMC put there for whatever reason. I know the engine can give off harsh vibrations with sputtering or leaving it in gear on deceleration but that's about all I can think of for that shock. Mr.H_H
The top pin is in the path of my serpentine belt. Not sure why this got left out of my original post.
eaglescout526
How close is it to the serp belt? AC or no AC? I have a couple pics of that area. Here is one to reference; (before AC was added)
Mr.H_H
I had it routed wrong. Once I tore everything off It all came back. My alternator sits on top of the ac.

Yeah I guess it was one of those thing he had that was just blatantly obvious to me but may not have been for others.

Time to get some foamy engine cleaner and the hose, and go to work on the engine compartment.
Mr.H_H
I'm curious if the previous owner just kept dumping oil into it. It's everywhere.
