Redrover
I currently have a 1990 jeep Comanche short bed with a 4cylinder and It is a 4 speed. I have a donor Cherokee I believe its either a 1989 or 1990 that has the 6 cylinder with an automatic. I got both of these on Trade. The body on the Cherokee is rusted out and the floors are falling through. the Comanche on the other hand is in great condition other than maintenance items. I am wanting to swap the 4 cylinder to a 6 cylinder on the Comanche and I just wanted to see if anyone has ever done this and if so, what is needed. I mean obviously I'm going to need a flywheel, new clutch and a 5 speed transmission. just want to see if this swap will be worth it in the long run
Liketosmash
Assuming it is a 4.0 inline 6 and if so I just did this swap with a 1987 and 1988. Everything should go right into the Comanche from the Cherokee. You will need the Engine, alternator, AC (if equipped), airbox, exhaust header, intake, computer, accelerator cable, speedometer cable, radiator, fan, ignition module (they seem the same though), engine mounts and brackets from the Cherokee. It is a pretty straight forward swap and I may have forgotten additional pieces but those should be the big ones. Other things I can think of that you may want to swap are the gauge cluster and the heater/ac box if it has A/C in one and not the other. The inside fuse panel and wiring harness behind the dash should be mostly the same between the 2 but there may be a couple of surprises.

I just wanted to look into before I started the swap. Thank you!
Pete M
short answer is, take everything from the engine bay of the XJ and swap it over.
Eagle
It's a bolt-in swap, but remember that you need EVERYTHING from the donor vehicle, as Liketosmash spelled out. The computer (ECU) for your year is under the dash, above the driver's right foot. You'll also need the wiring harness. Make certain that you don't get rid of the hulk of the donor vehicle until you are certain that you have the swap completed and that it's running properly. mjeff87
And don't forget the frame horns, and the cover plate for the transmission tunnel for whatever transmission you are installing. Also the throttle pedal assembly (it's only a one-bolt deal) along with the cable, like 'Smash says. It's the little trivial things on this swap that are the real pain, and you don't think about. The drivetrain itself is actually pretty easy, lol.
