So, I did a toyota gear set... Which was the biggest PITA I've seen in a long time.

Pattern was good, backlash was good... Just needed to swap out the setup bearings for the real ones. Took it apart, popped off the setup bearings. Put the pinion in the freezer and the new bearings in the oven. They jsut dropped right on. Sweet.

Re-set backlash.

Run a pattern to be sure.

It looked like this:

Sweet. Apparently crappy SKF bearings aren't even close to timkens.

Now it get's to come back apart.

Call me stupid, or just non-knowledged about that, but I don't understand backlash and reading patterns AT ALL. Could ya please explain what I'm looking at?

i know that ideally all the teeth should show the same strike pattern... but as to what that should look like.. i'm with beaterjeep.

ernt kno nuttin.

So, what I'm gathering from my new found edumication on it, is that it's barely contacting the gears? Therefore meaning that over time if installed like that, it would be way sloppy and eventually break. Am I correct on that, or do I have it wrong yet again?

BTW, thanks all for the lesson on backlash, hope I have it right now.
