DirtyComanche
So, I did a toyota gear set... Which was the biggest PITA I've seen in a long time. Pattern was good, backlash was good... Just needed to swap out the setup bearings for the real ones. Took it apart, popped off the setup bearings. Put the pinion in the freezer and the new bearings in the oven. They jsut dropped right on. Sweet. Re-set backlash. Run a pattern to be sure. It looked like this: Image Not Found Image Not Found Sweet. Apparently crappy SKF bearings aren't even close to timkens. Now it get's to come back apart.
beaterjeep
Call me stupid, or just non-knowledged about that, but I don't understand backlash and reading patterns AT ALL. Could ya please explain what I'm looking at?

Kenosha Warrior
pretty much shows you that the marked spots that are surrounded by yellow and you can see sme contact isn't enough of contact and you'll thrash your gears.
JOMJ87
It should be centered and easy to see all edges. The tips shoudlnt be sharp angles. Back lash is how much slop is in it. So turn one way then reverse and see how much play there is inbetween. Cole
DirtyComanche
In summary, if the pattern looks like that, it's trash.
beaterjeep
So, what I'm gathering from my new found edumication on it, is that it's barely contacting the gears? Therefore meaning that over time if installed like that, it would be way sloppy and eventually break. Am I correct on that, or do I have it wrong yet again? BTW, thanks all for the lesson on backlash, hope I have it right now.
