I’m curious. Why move the gas tank further back and put it between the bumper and the rear axle?

At least the tank is 7 feet behind the driver instead of 6..

There is a ton of room between there so it fits most tanks and is convenient.  Being lifted, the tank should never be squished between the axle and bumper in a wreck, it would get pushed over the axle if the wreck was that bad.  It's also less of a concern since it's not under a passenger compartment.  If the tank were to send fuel everywhere in a collision, it would be in/under the bed rather than in the cabin like a Cherokee.  I still personally wouldn't want a tank there if I could avoid it.
