yeah, 86 was a... weird year.  thankfully they figured it all out in 87 and gave the overdrives 4.10s.

84-86 XJ/MJ stuff is so much fun because they more or less played Parts Roulette when assembling them.

I'm sure the 3.54s will be fine for what I'm doing, just cruising around town once in a while. Just disappointing cause I thought I was snagging some 4.10s.

 

I've done a lot of different tire/gear combos in different Jeeps. My current TJ is 5.13s with 37s and a 6 speed. Gears for days. I had a TJ with 3.73 on 33s with a 2.4 at one point as well.

 

I'll wait for a cheap xj with 4.10s to pop up or I'll get impatient and regear the Manche

If I'm remembering correctly, wasnt there a fuel saver option on the early models? One that came with some odd combination of trans and higher axle gearing? i havent seen it referred to in years, but I was thinking I saw it somewhere here in the past.
