gauge clusters?

Recommended Posts

can i swap gauge clusters between my 88 and 86? the 86 just has idiot lights, no rpm. the 88 has full gauges. and id like to have an rpm gauge in there. which i need to tear the 86 one out neways because the speedometer is startin to slip so i figured now would be the time to ask and do if i can.

Yes I believe you can.

The troubles start when the electronics started, about '91. Yours on both should be cable driven speedo's. You will need a new or swap old sending units for coolant and oil from gauge vehicle. they are different for idiot lights.

Don't forget that you'll need to swap the ending units in the 88 for the switches. Otherwise the new owner won't have use of the temperature or oil pressure lights. Not cool. It may just be easier/cheaper to get a junkyard cluster.

This is a great swap. I have done it twice and I need to find a new one and swap it in my MJ now. Who ever thought that a gas gage the size of your head would be better then a tach in a 5 speed rig? I can’t stand not knowing what the motor is doing.

I'm getting ready to do this on my '92 (with a '93 donor). Anyone figured out if it's possible to move the odometer forward (112K to 177K) on a 91+? I've seen some posts on NAXJA but didn't find any concrete answers.

thanks!

Most everything I've read has recomended taking it to a shop. That way it'll be "legal" and what-not. Costs seem to range from $10-30. Personally, my 88 has had 3 clusters so far and I've decided that I simply don't care what the odometer says. (Speedometer doesn't work anyways due to the mismatch of an 88 truck and a 99 t-case.)

I am planning to do this swap myself in the next couple weeks. My only question is, about how long will this process take, and why does nothing need to be changed in order to make the tach work?

Thanks in advance,

Tim

I just did this swap on my 88 mj using a cluster from a 87 limited. You can tear apart the odometer to make it match. There is a write up on NAXJA about how to do it. My donor cluster had a 121k on it and truck has 131k on it. Really easy to adjust just take some time. Total time including swapping the sending units was around an hour and half to almost two hours. Hope that helps.
