86' 2.5 to 91' 2.5 swap

Recommended Posts

Hello again!

While I'm waiting for my fancy intake and carb for my other, other 86' 2.8 fun, I've been working on installing a 91' 2.5 into an 86' that also originally had 2.5 but it was already gone before I bought it.

I'm swapping the harness and all so I'm good there.

The issue is the motor mounts will not line up no matter what I do..

I saved the 91' body side mounts off the frame, the drivers side is identical, but the passenger is shorter which is the way the engine needs to go.

The motor mount that is supposed to fit that side looks to be close to the same but I don't see how it mounts as there is only one slotted hole and a square hole within an inch and to the side.

The 86' mounts are different and they don't look correct either and I assume they won't line up with 91' engine side mounts.

I just spent three hours in the garage trying to make it line up but something is definitely wrong.

So what the heck am I missing?

You might need different frame horns.  I know for a fact that the 2.5 and 4.0 horns are different (cause I swapped in a 4.0 in place of my 2.5 in the '87 that I had).  The actual motor mounts were different too, although they looked the same.

I probably still have my OEM 87 2.5 frame horns down in my shed.....I could send them to you, or at least pull them out and measure them to see if there's any actual difference between them and the '86 version you're working with.

Xjjeeps.com has parts manuals.

I had to deal with motor mounts when dropping the 2.5L into my '91 MJ, although in my case my exact concern was because my engine/mounts came out of a '92 YJ. But I do remember there being breaks in years in the MJ/XJ mounts that didn't really seem to correspond to any major redesign. I ended up changing the passenger side engine bracket. Part numbers are cast into them.
