Gjeep Posted November 5, 2018 Share Posted November 5, 2018 I want to make sure before I install the transfer case linkage what position the arm of the transfer case needs to be in when in 2wd. See internet photo reference below. Is the arm all the way forward (towards the front of the truck) or all the way backwards (towards the rear of the truck)? kryptronic Posted November 5, 2018 Share Posted November 5, 2018 The arm is vertical (toward the rear) in 2WD. Like in the pic on the right. Front yoke will spin freely. kryptronic Posted November 5, 2018 Share Posted November 5, 2018 Although I just noticed the shifter arm on yours are positioned down and on the YJ it is up. So maybe somebody needs to look at an XJ/MJ for you. I tried looking at my 91 MJ just now but it's dark and raining cats and dogs out. I can't tell on the MJ right now. mjeff87 Posted November 6, 2018 Share Posted November 6, 2018 I want to sat on an MJ/XJ the arm is all the way forward. In any case, you can check it quick by hand. Grab the front yoke and stick a slip yoke into the rear output. Move the selector thru the positions while trying to spin both....it will be evident which position matches each detention. With the selector at each extreme position (all the way forward or rearward), only one of them will let the front yoke spin freely while holding the rear output. That would be 2HI. That's because on the YJ the shifter attaches to the transfer case, and on the XJ/MJ the shifter attaches to the body. The shifters are located differently but essentially push/pull the lever the same way. On the YJ the shifter bolts to the transmission. I knew they were different, and the tranny tunnel of my red '88 was hacked by the previous owner because he stuffed in a YJ tranny and transfer case -- complete with the YJ shifters. So I have a tall shift handle for the transmission, and the YJ transfer case shifter is an interference fit with the dashboard so he just cut off the top half of the shift handle.
