1996 XJ 4.0 5 speed

Crank sensor has oval plug.....every parts store I call asked if it is oval or rectangular..... I say oval....they say no stock.....but they have rectangular...... Aside from the plug what's the difference...... The sensor end is identical....could I not hardwire a rectangular one in just to get it moving?

Yes, they are all 3-wire mag pickups and are tested the same way. As long as the wires match the function, it will work. Test for 5V and ground at the existing connector to verify.

Yep, you have the 1996 bastard year CPS connector.  I had to get one from the dealership to match and it actually ended up being cheaper than aftermarket.(About fifteen years ago.)
