I've read conflicting reports on this so I thought I'd ask the question here.   Can I fit a transfer case from a manual transmission on my automatic transmission?

I have a '88 MJ 4.0 litre with an AW-4 transmission.   It's a 2WD that I plan to convert to 4WD.   I have most of the parts (axles, etc.) but I need to get a transfer case.   Ideally I'd find an automatic donor ... but no luck so far.

The tcase is universal.  It doesn't care if it mates to a manual or auto.

One issue to consider is the spline count for the trans that the tcase was mated to.  For manual trans, the BA10 had a 21 spline output shaft.  The AX15 had a 23 split output shaft.  So, the tcase input shaft needs to match the trans output shafts.  For manuals trans (4.0 engines) the change from BA to AX occured in mid-89 when Jeep changed trans.  You will need to get the tcase for the year of the trans.

For AW4 - :dunno:

Thanks Tim.   I thought transfer cases were pretty much the same.   I just now need to confirm the spline count on what I have.   I can pick up a transfer case from an '88 (manual - BA10 - 21 spline).   I haven't taken my '88 automatic apart yet but I "think" it should be a 21 spline as well.

Yes, I've read that but I'm not clear on what the differences are.  Basic question is if I can simply put a transfer case on a 2WD AW4 with or without modifying it (doubtful) or if I'm looking at swapping in a new 4WD AW4 as well (more likely).   I have a '95 XJ parts car with an AW4 and a NP231 and may be putting both into my '88 MJ ... just need to figure out if I'm looking at any other issues.

You need a 4wd transmission in order to fit a transfer case to it.  A 2wd transmission does not have the provision for a transfer case.

Thanks Dan.   I figured that would be the case.   As mentioned, I haven't taken anything apart yet or compared anything other than the axles.   Fortunately I have what I "think" I need sitting around I just need to yank it out.
