HO speedometer question

Recommended Posts

IIRC, oil, volts, speedo, and temp will mount in either the HO or Renix gauge box. You will also obviously have the dash wiring harness to content with if you swap gauge boxes.
I have HO (SAE) oil pressure, and water temp guages in my Renix cluster. The aux guages between the two eras are the same, mount the same and read the same.

Good call on the GM sender idea, with that tidbit ... I may just go full after market for the four outside guages. Easy enough to plumb and mount. I already have a mech oil pressure Guage in the right switch panel as it is.

Couldn’t you just swap in a HO cluster, get the plug with it and rewire to match the oil, temp, fuel, running new wires to hook up the HO speedometer and tachometer?
I know the fuel values are swapped, there are ways to work around that, and the tachometer signal goes through the PCM, but I think the rest of the senders are the same wiring path 84-early HO. Meaning they don’t go trough the PCM/ECU.

Poh-ta-toh, poh-tah-toh.

If the HO speedometer drops in the Renix housing and is easy to add wires (and a connector) to, that will likely be easier than messing with the fuel gauge or sender.  But it's going to depend what a guy has on hand for parts and what he's trying to accomplish.  If you had a HO fuel sender, or were using another gas tank, it might make more sense to use the HO cluster.

Either way, it's on my list of things to scrounge parts for.

There are only three electrical connections on the HO speedo. Why not insulate them from the cluster PC foil strip and just run separate hard wires to them?

Exactly, a guy could just put three little pigtails on it and terminate them into a Weatherpack/Molex/Amp/Deutz or whatever connector, so you could still pull the whole cluster out easily.

Anyone happen to have the pinout map for the HO clusters? This is what I was planning to do but on the pigtail I snagged from my HO donor. I have the Renix pinout diagrams (89 FSM set), but haven't found a good diagram for the HO cluster yet.
