Amccutc21 Posted January 12, 2018 Posted January 12, 2018 I picked up another Comanche tonight and as the title says, it has a loud squeal. It is a 1988 4.0 2-wd automatic. The squeal gets louder as RPMs go up. From what I’ve read on here, my first thoughts are the harmonic balancer. Will I be able to tell by looking at it visually or just replace it and hope it fixes the squeal?
HOrnbrod Posted January 12, 2018 Posted January 12, 2018 It might be the balancer, or it might be one of the pulley bearings turned by the belt. Pickup a mechanics stethoscope (below) or use a length of vacuum hose with one end stuck in your ear. You should be able to ID it easily.
Green Mesa XJ Posted January 12, 2018 Posted January 12, 2018 X2 on the stethoscope. I’ve had a belt pulley make a intermittent horrible squeak. Did it at first only when it rained, I thought it was just the belt.Cheap Chinese bearing eventually locked up. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
Amccutc21 Posted January 12, 2018 Author Posted January 12, 2018 Just purchased one from ebay, thanks!
kryptronic Posted January 12, 2018 Posted January 12, 2018 Check to be sure the belt is routed straight as well. I had a similar issue where lining up the pulleys better cured it.
Amccutc21 Posted January 12, 2018 Author Posted January 12, 2018 I'll check that out whenever the weather breaks, thanks!
Keyav8r Posted January 12, 2018 Posted January 12, 2018 If you want to check your balancer, I have photos of the bad one I pulled from ‘88 and the new replacement. PM an e-mail address and I’ll send them to you.
