np231 rebuild

Recommended Posts

Found out yesterday when I went wheeling the chain is loose as in it makes a horrible noise until it catches and then it works.  So I know that I will need rebuild.  Is there a master kit that is the go to for rebuilding these?  Would it be better to pick up a used t-case and put it in the jeep and hope for the best.  The mj is just my toy so it can be down for quite some time.  I can pick up a used one for about $150 but it seems that I can also get the rebuild for about the same price.

It's often easier to just snag a lower mile tcase.  However, that might not be terribly possible anymore.

SKF makes a bearing/seal kit.  It's decent.  You need to get the correct one for whatever year your tcase is as the input bearing changed, IIRC.

It might be worthwhile to snag some wide chain parts out of a 231C and get that chain if you want.  Cloyes makes chains for all of them, IIRC, and Omix does for the J variants too (wouldn't risk it), and you can probably still get one from New Venture?  Plus there's some eBay offshore options for even less (I'd do that before the Omix one, they're probably the same part).

Rebuild is fairly easy, even easier with the t-case on a bench. Theres a few different how to's on youtube that are great and easy to follow. Watched one from advance adapters to rebuild my Wranglers 231

Give it time.... before you know it, you'll have 3 MJs, a couple XJ donors, you'll be able to just go pull one from "stock".... Actually, I think If you look around, you should be able to find a decent used one for under a hundred bucks. Or your first whole donor for one or two hundred more....

Ended up opening my np231. Chain was definitely stretched. Once I got it cleaned up the back side of the case was wore into by the chain. Is this something that I need to replace or run it?  Also when I spin the bearings they spin with no problems. Is there a way to tell if the bearing are shot?
