00/01 4.0 in a 95 Cherokee

I have a 95 Cherokee 4.0 auto drivetrain in my 89 Comanche and the engine is overheating still after replacing / cleaning the whole system including a rebuilt head .

 

Question is : I have a friend that has a 00/01 XJ engine with 35k miles that I get for $300 , will it work ? I know I've got to change the head ( which I can switch from my 95 engine because it was freshly rebuilt ) and put the distributor in . Anything else I'm not seeing as to why it won't work?

Not easily. And, they're prone to head cracking.

I understand about the head , which is why I was putting the 95 head on . What are you referring to as not easy ?

 

Not enough coffee this morning. Didn't read down to the "head" part. 

 

  • XJ Cherokee and ZJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.
  • 2000+ TJ Wrangler and WJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.
  • YJ and 1997-1999 4.0L TJ blocks will interchange in XJ/ZJ
  • XJ/ZJ blocks, and the 2000+ TJ/WJ blocks do not interchange without significant modifications.

TJ/WJ 4.0L Engine blocks underwent clean sheet design changes effective in the 1999 WJ Grand and 2000 TJ Wrangler. These blocks are not interchangeable with XJ/ZJ engine blocks. The reason is motor mount bolt holes and belt driven accessory mounting bolt holes are in different locations, or not present at all, TJ/WJ vs. XJ/ZJ.

The 89 still using the Renix system w. the 95 block? Do you know / suspect why it's overheating?

 

I can't think of any reason why the 01 XJ block will give you any problems in the 89 MJ if you get rid of the coil packs, install the dizzy and use the 95 head w. the coolant temp sensor hole. It's a pretty common swap on the stroker forum to use the TUPY 0331 heads since they flow so well.

 

Also the 01 block has the main bearing girdle - a nice upgrade.

It's the complete 95 harness and all .I've replaced the ENTIRE cooling system minus the engine block , so I'm assuming a crack in the block or a clogged cooling port ( I flushed it very good) .

 

I'll probably just stick with the 7120 head for now being it was just rebuilt , I doubt the head on the 00/01 is bad right now ( already checked and it's not a TUPY head ) . I forgot to mention he also has a bored throttle body along with a hesco throttle body spacer . Never thought about the girdle ... thanks .

Since you're going with the bored throttle body (62mm I assume, stock is 60mm) I'd also use the 01 injectors with it ('00-'01, p/n 04854181,Blue tip, 49psi, 22.5lb/hr). The 95 OBD1 ECU will handle that well, and it'll be a nice little upgrade. You'll also need a fixed GM regulator (I have the p/n somewhere, also a spare if you need one) or an adjustable FPR on the fuel rail to bump the pressure up 10psi or so.  :thumbsup:

 

The Hesco TB spacer does nothing except take up hood clearance. I had one - then later sold it. Runs better w/o it.
