MJ Trailer Light Wiring Harness and Mount

I thought I'd do a writeup for Making a stock looking plug-n-play trailer wiring harness for Mj's. 

 

First lets start off with the wiring harness connector. This is done on a 92 MJ, from what I understand the harness connector is different on older (possibly renix) than later model MJ's. Luckily for those that have older model MJ's The connector pin out is able to be found in the electrical shop manual. 

 

Here's the Pin-out for late model connectors:

 

 

You can find these connectors on a Bunch of late eighties-early nineties Chrysler vehicles. I got mine out of a 89 dakota -on those the connector is located near the firewall bulkhead connector. Zj's use this same connector for the fuel pump as well. Here's the two connectors I salvaged

 

 

 

While I was in the junkyard I got a 7 pin trailer connector and wiring harness out of a WJ with a tow package. I really just decided to take it because of the Chrysler logo which makes it look stock (Plus u pull's are cheap!).

 

 

I searched around the yard for a bracket to use on my draw-tite hitch (I scored it off of cl for $80!) I found a bracket off of a ford excursion that I decided to use. It had a connector on it but due to my stubbornness of wanting a Chrysler one I just took the bracket. 

 

 

I decided to cut off the tail of the bracket and weld it to the bottom so it encloses the connector. It also uses the bend on the edge and makes it look stock. That's the only ford part # on my MJ

 

 

Once again, Because of my stubbornness of wanting that stupid logo I had to re-drill and tap the mounting holes for the WJ plug. I ended filling in the old holes with weld.

 

 

 

ON TO THE HARNESS

 

With the WJ harness and the two connectors that you salvaged splice the three wires together. I used bare crimp splices and then covered the connection with epoxy coated heatshrink to seal the connection. those crimps are just dorman 638-243 with the insulation removed.  If you use epoxy coated heat shrink make sure you get it hot enough that the epoxy gets really melty and then squeeze it around a bit to make sure it coats everything. The two wires I didn't use were for 12V power and the Electric brake controller. Since I don't plan on towing anything bigger than my 3 rail motorcycle trailer and I didn't want to Route a 12V line from the cab or install a electric brake controller I just left those two wires disconnected in the harness if I ever change my mind.

 

 

once done it should look like this:

 

 

Then wrap it in insulation to protect it from vibration 

 

 

Once that's done route it along the stock harness. Jeep didn't put very many unused holes in the sheet metal back there so I was unable to mount the harness with out piggybacking off of the existing wire routing. I wish the connector area looked a little more professional, but that's the best I could do without drilling.

Hopefully that helped someone who is looking to do the same thing! To me it looks factory. I forgot to mention that I mounted the bracket using 3 SS 1/4 bolts and tapped the threads into the receiver.

Nice job and looks great. Would be even nicer if you included a wiring diagram like the below. I just used a standard 4-pin setup for mine since I rarely trailer anything, but I like your setup much better.  :cheers:  I'll stick this up in the DIY index later..........
