88 Comanche shutting off

Recommended Posts

Hoping you all can help me out here. A few months ago my fuel pump went out on me. Put a new one in it and it seemed to run great, noticed it had a fuel leak around where the assembly goes into the tank so I put a new seal in it. Ever since I've had an issue of the jeep randomly shutting off. No stumbling or cutting out, will just be driving down the road and it's like you cut the key off. Sometimes it will go for miles without cutting out, sometimes you make it a few feet. It always starts right back up though, and doesn't seem to have an extended crank time or anything. Just put a new CPS as I know it is a common problem and it didn't help it.

Thanks in advance!

Probably a loose connection on the fuel pump.  Or a pin has pushed out of the connector on the harness there.  Or a loose ground.  Start with the area you were mucking with when you first had the problem show up, which you've lead me to believe is the fuel pump/sender.

My 88 does the same thing and it's the ignition switch.  Try wiggling the key next time and see if it will keep running.  I might ask if anyone knows if the switch can be accessed enough to allow a spray of WD 40 to hit it without dismantling?

Thank you all for the replies, I will try and check all options this evening. The reason I didn't think it was fuel related is because it shuts off so immediately with no stutter and starts right back up. I figured if it was running out of fuel it would take a second to build pressure back up before starting.

Found the problem, ended up being a bare connector in the fuel tank hitting the side of it and grounding the pump out. Thanks again everyone!

Thanks for reporting back, and great news that you figured it out!!!
