I'm sure there are probably several other threads about this already. I did searches but didn't find quite what I was looking for.

I have holes in the down pipe, I don't have a cat but don't see any evidence that I ever did. All the pipe and hangers and everything seem to be where they should be.

So I'm looking at replacing everything from the exhaust header down. I have never done this and have questions. Everything appears to be bolted on, is this correct? I would like to add the cat back on. I assume I had one from the factory, but it sure doesn't look like it. Then my other question is, what mufflers will give me the best sound? I don't want something annoying, but I'd like a good growl if it's possible from a 4.0L.

I've found the pipe online for like 30 bucks each. So what else do I need? Gaskets? Hangers? Clamps? Any input would be great. Thanks all.

I replaced my entire system with Walker Exhaust products. I looked up the P/N's on Rock Auto and then searched for them on Google and ended up buying them on Amazon. Perfect fitment.

Oh, I didn't use the Walker muffler. No idea what it was but it was cheap. 30 bucks tops. Sounds okay.

I have a flowmaster delta 50 on mine and it's ok, no v8 sound but decent. I've always wanted to try magnaflow and recently for my other truck I've been drawn to the borla pro xs universal muffler.

I ordered a new exhaust system for the 86 diesel project.  Ordered all Walker parts, using Rock Auto, Amazon, and Ebay's Pep Boys.  Went for a mid priced muffler, not the cheapie.  Reasonably priced, quality name.  The TDI engine conversion in in process, so can not say anything about the sound, except it should be quiet with the turbocharger on the engine and a single muffler.  And all the parts/pieces, hangers, etc seem to be bolt on and clamp together.  And there was no cat on the 1986 diesel.  If there had been a cat, I would have replaced it with a new, CARB approved converter

True, the 86 MJ 2.1's didn't have cats. Buy VW TDI-engined cars used them. 8)

Or are you going to use one of those TDI engines with an emissions defeat device like VW did?

No, it's a 98 engine.  The dieselgate engines were 2009 and later.

I plan on Walker exhaust pipe. Got to add the cat, probably just go with whatever. Then I guess I'll check sound clips online for the muffler. I know it won't be the same. I heard good things about flow master 40 series I think it was.

Just noticed you're in Corpus. I might be riding through on Wed to do some fishing in my Comanche.

Always nice to see other Comanches, even better when I know they are "in the club." Wish I was off work, I'd meet up. Love fishing and MJs.
