1989 Jeep Comanche 4.0 Disc Brake Conversion Dana 35

I’ve been wanting to get the wilwood kit for the Dana 35 rear. Would have to be modified to fit the non c-clip d35 though. I know some may say its a waste to work on a 35 but my axle is original to the truck, fully trussed (tnt customs), revolution axle shafts, 4.56 gears and a truetrac. Only running 33’s so it’s a good setup for me. I want better brakes for towing though and the self cleaning feature of disks would be very helpful for where I live.

I would say yes a Wilwood kit is a little much and I would just go with a G2 disc brake conversion kit which will give you the braking you desire without costing a fortune and is an easy install with over the counter parts.    
 

I understand wanting good brakes as I did 4 piston Brembo brakes all around on my MJ but I did it because of my stroker engine and I used the complete SRT8 D44 that comes factory with the Brembo and mod-Ed the front to match but with big brakes means large rims to clear the brakes as I can not run anything smaller then an 18” rim to clear my brakes.

I see but just adding Discs to the rear of the MJ will Make it way better and for the simplicity that's the better option in my opinion, As I went from stock disc/drums in my MJ to a ZJ rear D44A and having 4 wheel discs was a Massive upgrade so unless your MJ is running 35's or larger the Bolt on G2Axle Disc brake kit which is super cheap and a very easy install and will save you thousands over a Wilwood front and rear kit as you won't want to just add big wildwood rear brakes without upgrading the front...

I prefer readily available parts so I stuck with Stock SRT8 4 Piston Brembo because they were the stock brakes on my axle upgrade and then with a very easy mod I was able to install the front SRT8 4 piston Brembo calipers up there...
If you have the older 84-89 knuckles you can bolt on 4 piston Brembo's to the front with Mustang GT350 front rotors then a G2 rear disc brake kit and will have all the braking you could ever need...

Wilwood front and rear are approx 1700 and will be 4 piston fronts and 2 piston rears. Blaine at black magic brakes has the rear d35/44 disk kit for like $425 right now with free shipping. I’ve not noticed better stopping power with just switching from drum to disks. However, the advantages of a self cleaning system that does much better at dispersing heat is what I am looking for. Easier to service as well. To me, the little single piston calipers on 11” disks are just not that big of a difference when for $300 more I could have the wilwood 12+” rotors with dual piston setups. And yes, I would want to do the fronts as well down the road. For now though, I am looking into doing an electric brake booster setup.

    The mustang rotors and srt8 calipers are a nice combo but will require spacers and likely the master cylinder may need to be bumped up to 1.25 bore for those 6 piston calipers depending on the bore size. If I had a hydroboost or electric booster setup than I could probably get away with the zj style disks in the rear. My ideal setup though would run the wilwoods and hydroboost/electric booster. Right now I have a 8” dual diaphragm booster with a 1.125 bore. My cam doesn’t give me much vacuum to work with though.
