gauge panel removal

Recommended Posts

Not sure what it is called but I have the panel that covers the gauge cluster loose but can't pull it out. I tried searching but could not find anything definitive. How do you get it out the way to get to the gauge cluster? If the column would tilt I could safely pull it out I think. Do I need to drop the column to get it out? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

If you're talking about the trim bezel that extends across the dash to the radio, it's held in place by four screws in the gauge cluster and some tabs that push in near the radio. Once you have the screws out and the tabs loose you just work the top out towards the steering wheel. It will require a little flexing and a good pull to get it out, but it will come out without breaking. Just take your time and you'll get it out.

I have the screws and the little piece below the column out. It just doesn't feel like it will come out. Kind of scary flexing 28 year old plastic hoping it doesn't break.

I have done it on old Jeeps to the tune of 20 plus times. Doesn't break. Lower the steering column if you're skeered.

Got it all back together and all gauges are working except the volt gauge reads real low. A tip for anyone that is doing this, if you have a column shift put it in gear and the the top cover falls right back into place. A simple step that is not mentioned in any of the write-ups that I looked at.
