rockhardzj
OK, I have a NP231-J out of a 93XJ, the XJ had a 4.0/ax-15 combo. I am in the middle (near end, really...) of swapping the tail shaft and tail housing and other gizmos inside to stuff from my 98XJ. The 98XJ had a 4.0/AW4 combo, with a NP231-J Before I finish putting my 231 back together for the SECOND time, I want to know if I can leave the 93's input shaft/gear/whatever it is alone so it will hook up to a AW4 from a 96XJ. Keep in mind, this tcase is being swapped from a 93 w/ax-15 to a 96 w/aw4 trannies. The engines, I know have no differences. I think i have all the details, I just need an answer. Twisty
I believe that the 21 spline 231's ceased to exist with the Renix system. The 23 spline units came with the HO motor.
rockhardzj
So then, I should be all fine and dandy, and be able to bolt it up, and not have to smack myself across the face for not changing input shafts...
carnuck
Just check the depth of the input gear vs the output shaft's extension and you'll know for sure. I have to put in a 1" spacer to run a NP208J behind the AW4 I'm putting into my '83 J10.
tjbliley
Go here and look at the info required for the adapters. It is fairly acurate. http://www.advanceadapters.com/
Bounty Hunter
www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/np231.htm states it should be the same input shaft between the two (except for the gear cut, which won't matter in your case). I would measure to be sure.
rockhardzj
Novak says my shafts are the same, so I should be good.
pingpong
As their site probably pointed out there are 2 different length inputs IIRC
