No set screw in the AX-15 shifter. Put lower piece in a vise and use a big punch (brass is best) and a hammer. They will come apart....I just did mine to replace the rubber seal atop the shift tower that keeps air/ water out of the cab.

You're saying to just put the lower part in a vise and basically beat the top portion off?

There was a special Jeep tool for separating the upper and lower halves of the shifter. Several years ago the shop foreman at my dealer told me they never, ever used it, and they finally threw it out to make room in the tool crip for tools that fit the newer vehicles.

Are the upper portions interchangeable? I was wanting to put that upper on the lower that goes to my ax15... they look similar in shape but not exact

I used a HOT 3/4" paint scraper/putty knife...jammed it in, pulled it out, all four sides around, then I applied some torch heat to the main body of the shifter and pulled it right out.  when I put it back together I used some adhesive RTV.  Worked fine, took five minutes.  No whacking.
