Hippie66 Posted December 3, 2016 Posted December 3, 2016 I dropped the tank on my '89 MJ this morning to swap in a new tank. Found the soldered joints where the lines pass through the plate broken loose. Knowing the part isn't available, I decided to repair mine. It turned out pretty good. A propane torch, solder, flux, and a couple of stainless steel brushes were all that was needed.
Hippie66 Posted December 4, 2016 Author Posted December 4, 2016 New tank, fuel pump, roll over valve grommets, and all fuel lines, repaired sending unit. Ready to bolt it back in so my truck can resume daily driver status.
ahmincha Posted December 4, 2016 Posted December 4, 2016 What type of solder and flux did you use. Looks great
Hippie66 Posted December 4, 2016 Author Posted December 4, 2016 http://m.homedepot.com/p/Oatey-H-20-5-Water-Soluble-Paste-Flux-Kit-with-Safe-Flo-Solder-506912/202515582 Biggest issue is getting it clean. I used a stainless steel wire brush, then heated and applied flux, then wire brush again. I hit it several times. Once I was satisfied with how clean it was, more flux and sweated the solder in.
HOrnbrod Posted December 4, 2016 Posted December 4, 2016 Just like sweating in copper pipe joints. Done plenty of that, but never tried it on steel. Good to know and hope it holds up.
Hippie66 Posted December 4, 2016 Author Posted December 4, 2016 First time I have done it on anything. Really easy.
88whitemanche Posted December 4, 2016 Posted December 4, 2016 Nice job! Where did you get the grommets for the vents? On top of the gas tank?
