pigeot to ax15 swap help

Recommended Posts

ok as some of you know ive been having some issues with my pigeot. its stuck in gear and the shifter appears to be in the neutral position, thought the shifting forks were mis aligned, but no luck re aligning wiht a screw driver.

anyways, i found a ax15, 2wd trans. to swap my pigeot 2wd trans with.

question is, what all do i need to do the swap? the clutch is different right? the slave cylinder? is the flywheel different, or driveshaft? and will the ax15 mount to my crossmember?

and info will be great, guy only wants 200$ for the trans.

The good news is you'll have an easier time with it since your truck is 2wd, no messing with the transfer case. What parts you'll need depends on the AX15 that is available and if it is the internal or external slave cylinder and if not do you want to swap it to one, etc. There's plenty of info on it on Google as it has been done many times. If you can find out the year of the AX15 then you can get an idea what you'll need, again depending on if you care about the slave cylinder or just getting your truck fixed. Of course if you're going to do the swap it's always preferable to have the external slave for obvious reasons.

Now about that Peugeot, the one good thing I will say about them is that they are so universally hated you can pick up another one on the cheap. People are only too happy to get rid of them. If you can't find any locally, they are small and light enough that you can have one shipped for a reasonable cost. That opens up a lot of sources. I've seen them on Fleabay for under 200 and that included shipping. I throw this info out there just in case you don't wind up with an AX15 for whatever reason. I wouldn't try to talk anyone into keeping the puke goat. If I did have one on my vehicle and I was going to keep it that way, as long as I had a place to keep them, I'd keep a couple spares on hand.

I also wanted to tell you, unless you found out something new you should drop your trans first and have a look at your clutch. Could be something went haywire on that and maybe you don't need a trans after all. It has to come out anyway.

Something else I just thought of, check your motor mounts and make sure they aren't loose. That's a whole other issue with the 4.0. Sometimes they break and can change the angle of the engine which can cause the shifter to become misaligned. If you do find any loose ones I'd recommend changing them now to avoid future problems.

If the AX15 is from 93 and earlier MJ/XJ, it is most likely an internal slave cylinder.  I believe you would need a new/matching int. slave for the AX15.

If the AX15 is from a 94 and later XJ, then it is an external slave.  This is a plus.  You will definitely need an ext. slave and a hose line.  You could purchase a master/slave kit which is a pre-bled set up.  Make sure the kit is for a PRE-97 AX15.  The master cylinder for the later years will interfere with the brake booster.

Bad news is the cross members are different.  Try to get the cross member AND mounting bracket that came with the AX15.

Everything else is P-N-P.

Good luck.

thanks alot guys. mjanky ill try those things, and the motor mounts may be bad, if u saw the way i had to rock and twist and pull on that transmission to get it out the first time. the shaft had a bit of surface rust on it. but the 2nd time i pulled it, was not too bad.
