Jeepmmmj Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Hello all! I'm new here and have a question. I am replacing the ingnion cylinder in my 91 comanche I have just got and ran into this issue. The gear behind the cylinder is striped out and needs to be replaced. Do any of you know where I can buy one of these little guys? Or know what this is called? I believe it is an ignition rack n pinion gear but I'm not 100% sure. I cannot locate one at a autozone or advanced store and don't really want to pull one at a junk yard but I will if I have to!. Any help or leads would be great let appreciated and thanks in advance! I'll upload pics in the comments.
yxmj Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 If you can clarify your question.. There are only 2 gears involved with the starter....the gear on the starter itself (change the starter) and the ring gear (flex plate) that the starter gear turns to turn the motor (pull the trans off to change)....sorry no rack and pinion involved... :dunno: Sorry...read that the first time on my phone and did not read the first part correct......just ignore
jimoshel Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Get a GM. They're all the sane. Any auto parts will have one.
HOrnbrod Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 According to the parts manual, they vary between the tilt, non-tilt, and column shift columns. Which do you have? Tilt: 83510055W/o Tilt: 83502610
Jeepmmmj Posted April 25, 2016 Author Posted April 25, 2016 I have a non tilt column. I have the dealer looking for it now and they said they would call me back. Thanks for the references.

HOrnbrod Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Pretty sure this is the one you need since it's for a non-tilt Saginaw column, the same column you have. http://www.ebay.com/itm/IHC-Scout-II-422311C1-Ignition-Switch-Sector-Gear-Plastic-Steering-Column-/261760203176?hash=item3cf21fb9a8:g:CUYAAOSw8d9U0rFW&vxp=mtr Another: http://www.steeringcolumnservices.com/gm-buick-cadillac-chevrolet-oldsmobile-pontiac/rack09-non-tilt-sector-gear.php
