cheapest engine swap 86

Recommended Posts

A lot of people with the 86 go to a 3.4L from a camaro (not sure on years). But a lot of things bolt on to the 3.4l block from the 2.8.  A 4.0l in a 86 will take awhile, search for it on here, some people have done it.

The GM 3.4L v6 Camaro motor is the most straightforward swap, especially if you keep the carb, but even ditching the carb for FI isn't too bad. Some guys have done it here, some good walk throughs, and you can google that swap, it's really common.

You can check to see if your Comanche is a late year 86 and has the different firewall to accept a larger motor, but honestly going any bigger than the 3.4L and you'll be wanting to upgrade the rest of your drive train. The ax-5 can hold up to an unmodded 3.4l as long as you are kind to it, but I think anyone would recommend swapping to a different tranny at some point.

If this is sonething you end up wanting to do, you should get in touch and I'd love to cone give another member a hand. Depending on what route you wanna go... I've got a firewall from a 87 comanche we could weld in along with a ax15 and np231 I would be willing to give you. Ive got a couple 4.0's but I would want a couple bucks for one of them. Also have a 2.5 that needs a new head. Reguardless id like to come help another member out from my state. Probably have any other part you could be interested in too.

Cheapest thing you can do is stick with the GM v6 family.  Lots of them around in salvage yards.  Pick up a 3.4 with fuel injection from a rear drive Camaro around 1993.  Later model front wheel drive 3.4 V6 have aluminum heads and other goodies you can mount on the 3.4

Money_Pits, hope your talkin to NorthWoods, that sounds like a heck of a deal, a little $$$ and the help of another local MJ owner who is willin to wrench, supply parts, experience and knowledge = more money than you could save yourself, plus you get the added benefit of meeting a friend/fanatic who is local. (I live in MT so anything 250 mi or so is local lol)
