Borla Header Fitment (PN: 17039)

Recommended Posts

So my HO replacement long block is finishing up at the shop next week (sooner than expected). I'm going through my parts list in a panic to get everything in order. I will be having a shop R&R the engine in the MJ. I currently don't have a garage (after a recent move), and I'm trying to make sure all my ducks are in a row to make the install as simple as possible to avoid additional labor charges.

I'm building this truck for my self with no intentions of selling, so i am looking to do things right the first time. I would like to run a full 300 series stainless exhaust. But it looks like our options are limited. I have my eyes on the Borla head and front pipe, part number 17039, which is spec'd for the 93-97 XJ.

I'm wondering if anyone has put it on an MJ? My plan would be to have the shop install this part of the system, then run a "dumped" exhaust (temporarily) until i can find a shop to bend me an full stainless cat-back system.

Any idea if this will work, or will the system require extensive modification to get it that far?

Thanks

James

I suspect (but don't have enough evidence to confirm) that the only difference between the '93+ and the earlier exhaust is that the early one has a bolted flange connection to the cat and the later one is just a pipe connection. At least that was the case for my '93 XJ, my '93 XJ replacement pipe currently installed on my '91 MJ, in contrast to my '91 MJ's original pipe.

The manifold itself is the same from '91 to '97(+?), which is why I'm pretty sure that flange is the only difference. The early pipe's support also bolts to the flange instead of being welded on, but that's not a huge deal, it still ends up in the same spot.

I drool over the Borla header. It's just waaaay out of my price range.

I think the main difference between headers listed for the Renix era vs HO is that the Renix has a bung for the EGR system. I think the two listed for them are the Clifford and the Pacesetter. I have/had both. The Clifford you have to drill through a wall in the tubing to 'activate' it. I though Borla or Banks might have made one for the Renix. The larger tubes cover the ports of the years to my knowledge.
