96 gauge cluster in a 90 pioneer

Recommended Posts

Okay so I managed to find a decent set of full gauges at a pull yard yesterday, and since I have dummy lights and would really love to know before something turns bad that it is bad haha. Anyways, the reason for this post is, I didnt really notice until I got back home that the speedo and such runs electronically in the 96 sport rather that with the conventional cable that I run now. What specific parts will I need to make this work? Are there any impending issues from switching it over, compatibility issues?

Thanks!

Jacob.

um, I'm not sure that anything will work right.  how would you even plug it in?  are the plugs compatible?  that's Renix vs OBD2

such is the nature of my question haha

I'm in the dark about that as of right now so my question is more is it possible,

and if it not i also doubt that it is possible to use just the gauge faces in my current cluster

The 96 cluster is the same as the OBD1 clusters - that's what I have in my 91. And no, it's not going to play fully in your 90, if at all. Even if the connectors are the same the pinouts won't be. At best the temp and oil pressure gauges might work, and the fuel gauge will read backwards. You need a 1990 or below cluster for everything to play.

just a thought, no idea if it would work. but possibly swapping each gauge independently from the 96 cluster to the 90 cluster might work. its pretty easy to do.. just a couple Philips screws and a half hour

but the spedo still wouldn't work?
