88 pioneer 4.0 vac harness and rear brakes

Recommended Posts

I started to get my 88 pioneer with 4.0l back running and seen that the front and rear vac harness has multiple line hacked off, giant hole in the gas tank, rusty fuel lines, 70% of the rear brake lines have rusted away, and no e-brake cable from cab to axle. I ordered a new tank and all 3 new vacuum harness' from rockauto. I'm sure the height sensing brake system doesnt work but I won't know till I get everything ran.  PO said he ran a 5 gal gas can in the passenger seat as a gas tank just to start it up twice a year but didnt have it running in a couple of years. So I was hoping someone can show me a pic of the correct stock configuration to run new brake lines and where the harness connects.

I think the previous owner lied to you. In the OLD old days, when we had carburetors and low-pressure mechanical fuel pumps that sucked fuel to the pump, you could do as he claimed (although putting a can of gas in the passenger seat area seems incredibly stupid to me). But both the '88 4.0L multiport injection and the '88 2.5L throttle body injection have the fuel pump in the tank, and the fuel system is pressurized all the way from the tank to the injectors.

What would have delivered fuel from this alleged gas can to the injectors? And how would that fuel have been pressurized to around 40 psi?

I've seen people just drop a loose pump with wires and hose attached into a gas can. I agree though, I'd much rather leave that deadly contraption in the bed and risk it walking away over breathing fumes all day...

That's also ignoring the whole live wires in a gas can issue. Again, not something I'd want in the cab with me. Or anywhere, really.
