Suspension replacement to keep stock ride height

Looking to replace the original front suspension components for my 88 comanche daily driver . Want to keep the stock ride height but increase the ride quality! Need to know what parts I need and if anybody has done this already and have any suggestions or tips. Only looking to replace the coils and shocks and maybe add a new steering stabilizer in the process

What makes you think you might need coils?

 

If your truck still has the flares on the front, measure the height from the center of the front hub/axle straight up to the bottom of the flare lip. Post that dimension, and tell us if you have a 2.5L or a 4.0L, 2WD or 4WD.

 

Unless your front coils are badly sagged, I would just replace the shocks.

Measuring from the top of the hub to the fender its around 16.5 and from the center its around 18 inches. Comanche is 2wd 4.0L I6. Was only looking to replace coils to get it all over with and get all the parts replaced at once but I may only replace the shocks. Has anybody had any good experience with aftermarket shocks? can't find too much information or details on the ride quality on replacement shocks.

To increase ride quality, I'd start with all new bushings in the front end (control arms and sway bar).  Then make sure all your TREs and ball joints are tight with no slop.  Throw on a good set of shocks and have the thing professionally aligned.  It only costs a couple hundred bucks to do all that and it will ride like new.

 

Replacing your rear leaf spring bushings can help a ton too.

The measurement is to be taken from the center of the hub to the bottom of the flare lip. The accepted measurement for "stock height" on 4WD XJs and MJs is 17.5". When measuring ride height according to the factory service manual, they give a tolerance of +/- 1/2-inch. Your measurement puts you at the maximum for stock ride height, meaning that there has been zero sag, and you don't need to replace the coils.

 

For street duty, OME shocks always get great reviews, but I don't even know if they make them for stock height vehicles (and I don't know if they have rear shocks to fit MJs). Bilstein is a good choice, according to many MJ owners. I've had good results with Monroes and with Gabriels, but you'll find other MJ owners who disagree.
